NLT Travels to the Boston AMS Annual Meeting!

January 13, 2020·NLT Staff

New Light Technologies' (NLT) Geophysical Data Scientist and Senior Geospatial Consultant will represent NLT at the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Annual Meeting this year. The 2020 meeting is especially meaningful because the AMS is marking its 100th anniversary. To commemorate this historic milestone, the meeting returns to Boston — the city where AMS first started and is currently headquartered.

This year, the AMS theme is "Building LINKS," and the NLT team's presentation touches on several key areas including risk management, research and development, and building links across technologies. Our researchers will present their work on the Tornado Damage Assessment model, a collaborative project founded and developed by a dedicated team within the company. They will describe how the model estimates damage from any single tornado event: it runs a statistical process that compares the Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale rating of a tornado against a building-structure inventory of the area it is expected to hit, producing a cumulative estimate of the damage to the impacted area.

The NLT team is excited to showcase its work in disaster modeling to the community of meteorologists, response professionals, and surveyors attending. The technology and science behind climate research is changing almost as quickly as the weather. NLT is ready to make the most of the networking and collaboration opportunity that the centennial AMS Annual Meeting offers!
