NLT Supports Bi-Coastal GIS Day Events

New Light Technologies (NLT) brings its celebration of the innovative promise GIS holds to all corners of the country. From Florida to California, NLT staff engaged with GIS professionals on the ground — cultivating mapping skills and educating communities on cutting-edge geospatial tools.

As part of Geography Awareness Week, the company sponsored a Mapathon co-hosted by the State College of Florida (SCF) and the Gulf Coast GIS Users Group. Led by an NLT staff member, a small dedicated group of Manatee County staff and SCF students learned how they can help humanitarian efforts by mapping in OpenStreetMap (OSM). The group practiced making maps on the OSM interface, used the Humanitarian OSM Team tasker to find current humanitarian support tasks, and mapped for a couple of hours — mapping areas in Tanzania to support international health efforts by adding roads, footways, and buildings.

NLT also sponsored the Geo4Dev Conference hosted at UC Berkeley. NLT's Chief Scientist co-chaired the event, and an NLT FEMA Team Lead exhibited the Hurricane Incident Journal, a powerful web application that visualizes hazard exposure, predictive impacts, and the damage costs a storm will have on communities.

"New Light has an unmatched commitment to education and capacity-building with geospatial technologies around the USA and the world," said NLT's CEO, looking forward to a future where geospatial advancements can do the most good by solving some of humanity's most pressing challenges.
