As the 2012 hurricane season approaches, getting the word out about new developments in web-based GIS situational awareness tools available to the public is a critical step toward improving national emergency preparedness, response, and recovery capabilities. NLT staff showcased OnTheMap for Emergency Management — an innovative web-based geospatial Census data tool for viewing, in real time, the potential effects of disasters on the U.S. workforce and population.
A new version of the public tool is being readied for release at the start of hurricane season in June, offering real-time reporting of Census block-level workforce, population, and housing characteristics for areas impacted by hurricanes, floods, wildfires, winter storms, and federal disaster-declaration areas.
